A visit to the LB o Jzazz art studio

Glue. Paper. Object. Imagination. That’s all you really need for Decopatch. A modern evolution of the traditional French art of decoupage, Decopatch is one of the hottest new crafting trends in Kuwait. I’ve been wanting to try it for a while and finally had a chance to visit the LB o Jzazz studio in Jabriya this past weekend with my oldest daughter.
We were greeted at the door by the very welcoming local artist Lubna Saif Abbas who runs the studio. She teaches a range of art and crafting classes including Decopatch. All the materials you need for it can be bought at the studio and it is something even young kids can do (with supervision).
“Decopatch is essentially collaging and decoupaging at the same time,” explains Abbas. “There is special paper that you use. It’s for kids from ages 3 to 93, kids and parents, interior designers, interior decorators and artists. It’s a very wide and flexible medium.”
The scissor-less activity is child friendly. Kids can tear the paper and work on small models or any objects from home that they want to upcycle (hangers, bottles, ceramics, furniture, boxes or just about anything). The glue is all water based, nontoxic and acid free. (But not edible!)
LB o Jzazz offers Decopatch classes for kids and parents together. An entry level Decopatch class lasts for two hours and includes materials, the fee is KD 8.5. It’s open to children and adults from 5 years old + (they prefer that parents come or drop their kids off but leave the nannies at home).
The studio will offer Decopatch birthday parties (for 5-8 kids at a time).
Lubna is also a bead artist and jewelry maker and LB o Jzazz offers classes on bead embroidery, jewelry making, origami, sewing (beginners) and more. The studio sells all the materials needed for beading, Decopatch and other crafts including a range of items for scrapbooking including paper stock, stickers, washi tapes, card stocks, papers, and other materials. LB o Jzazz opens for a monthly Meet and Bead and has Open Studio nights where visitors came come to learn more and practice their crafts and arts. Children are welcome. And the weekend hours make it possible for parents that work during the week to visit.
We had an amazing time and my daughter spent more than an hour creating her Decopatch project. As a textile artist, I was excited to try the Decopatch and really enjoyed the process. I’ve never spent much time with paper arts and crafts before so this was a fun and new experience and I found it very easy to learn the technique. My six year old loved the activity and she was so focused and serene throughout. I think it’s a great way to encourage creativity and do something together (and reduce screen time).
