Did you know that there are 27 public libraries in Kuwait? Many of them have both Arabic and English books, magazines and periodicals and several have children's rooms?
Almost all of the local libraries are located next to or near the coop in residential areas. Of the 27 libraries, two are for women only (in Rumaithiya and Sabah al Salem) and three are under renovation. Most are open from 8am to 1:30pm in the morning and in the evening from 4:00pm – 9:00pm during the week but are closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
The public libraries are open for any visitor regardless of age or nationality. They also have computers though some may be old or not working.
Arabic books are in most demand though most public libraries in Kuwait also have a small selection of English titles. At the Khaldiya branch, there are about 23,000 Arabic books in this library, and about 3000 English books. “The most requested books are on Kuwait history and after that religious books. Readers can also borrow books and take them home to keep for up to two weeks, and in this case they have to pay KD 5 for each book as insurance, which is refunded when they return the books. So if they borrowed four books they will pay KD 20 as insurance. We don’t keep their IDs, we just take their information,” said Al-Rasheedi.
In Salwa area as well there is a public library in block 6 next to the Burger King. It doesn’t have a huge selection of English language books, but it does have a nice, open kids area. Working hours are from 8am – 1pm, and from 4pm – 8pm.
